Planning and preparation can help you - and your spouse - feel safer about a defining shift in your professional life.
I left a full-time career in education to stay home with our two young children while my ex-wife worked long hours in medicine. It was a decision we made together — between the two of us, we had two demanding jobs and a household that needed someone present, and something had to give. I spent years investing in my education and training, earning two graduate degrees in teaching and education policy, and ultimately joining the leadership team; however, the paid working hours combined with the unpaid labor and cognitive load of primary parenting created a reality for me that was unsustainable.
For years, the arrangement worked. But it also quietly reshaped the balance between us: she kept building a career, a paycheck, a professional record. I kept our household running, which is real work, but work that doesn't show up on a resume or a bank statement. When we separated, I found myself defending the value of that work in a divorce proceeding, in my 40s, with a skills gap and no easy way to prove what four years of full-time caregiving had actually been worth.
That gap — between what caregivers actually do and what they can show for it — is what I'm building for. Not a return-to-work tool bolted onto a job board, but a living record: a resume and skills tracker that update as the pause happens, financial tools to build independence during it, a way to stay connected to a professional community through it, and a straightforward legal template so partners can put real terms around a career break before they need them.
I built the thing I wish I'd had.
You don't have to lose yourself. Even while you're glad for this time with your kids, it will test things you assumed were fixed — your marriage, your identity, your place in your own home. That's rarely anyone's fault, spouse included. It's what happens when the role of primary parent still comes loaded with gender. Planning and preparation can help you - and your spouse - feel safer about a defining shift in your professional life.
